A Study in Permeability
Recorded Lecture & Workshop Series
Facilitated by Alma
In a series of three workshop sessions, we'll circle around the notion of permeability as it relates to creativity and the creative psyche. We shall wander across discipline, time, perspective, and medium with the intention to enter into somewhere or something beyond, one that expands our notions of being and seeing—a beyond which is primarily creative. With embodied presence, we’ll explore how we participate in our creative unfolding by way of relation, juxtaposition, and the play of image.
At the center of this series is play, a function through which we discover the delight of something new and unknown. Through play, we enter into the realm of creative imagination, a world that also asks to enter into and inhabit us.

What’s inside
Module 1: The Imaginal Other
In our first session, we explore the value of softening the edges of our known world to create a porousness that allows something other—something alive and imaginal—to enter and shape us. We look at the interplay between self and image, asking what it means to be worked over by the creative impulse.
Here we get a sense for the importance of permeability—how easing the divide between the known and unknown parts of us allows us to evolve creatively.
In practice, you’ll be introduced to a form of Jungian active imagination to illuminate your inner world and your relationship to creativity.
Module 2: Muse, Memory & Desire
In this session, we look to the idea of the muse as source of inspiration. We look to inspiration and its relationship with the inflow and outflow of breath. We examine the Classical image of the Muses from the lens of the poets Sappho, Pindar, and Hesiod and their link to Mnemosyne, or Memory. We inquire, what does creation have to do with remembrance?
We traverse the ideas of erotic ecology, of matter’s constant reformulation by touch. We consider the erotic nature of inspiration—the gravitational pull toward aliveness and form. We consider desire not only as longing, but as movement toward encounter.
In practice, we open to the muse through guided imagination, inviting her presence as both inner knowing and outer echo.
Module 3: Imagination & Poiesis
In our final session, we explore the creative power of imagination as a bridge between matter and meaning. We turn to the imaginal realm—not as fantasy, but as a subtle and symbolic mode of perception that brings us into relationship with soul.
Examining the imaginative potential of encounter, we arrive at imagination as the “primary creative agency” within the human and a link between matter and spirit. It is that faculty through which the unseen becomes visible, and the unspoken begins to take form. Poetic expression arises not from invention, but from attunement to what already longs to emerge.
In practice, you’ll be invited into imaginal encounter through active imagination, learning how to hold space for what emerges and participate in the unfolding of image into form.
