The Imaginalis Institute is delighted to host an intimate 6-day residence in a private home on Hydra island. Join Subtle Practice founder and facilitator Alma Tetto for a week of embodied creative inquiry embedded in the unique spirit of the land and Aegean sea. Bringing archetypal image to life in the body through symbolic and physical encounter, we’ll invite the inner image of the Self to express itself in form.
For centuries, Hydra has drawn artists, poets, and seekers to its shores. Beyond the distinct quality of light and the island’s stark beauty, its draw is something more elusive. Creatives and revolutionaries have experienced the island as planting within them a seed of liberation. The writer Henry Miller described it as the freedom to toss away the compass. The island holds a kind of power to reconfigure the senses, allowing one to be creatively undone and remade.
In 1960, Yves Klein arrived on Hydra, entranced by the vastness of the Aegean. Here, his fascination with blue, l’immatériel, found its fullest expression. Private letters reveal his visit to Hydra led to the iconic Klein Blue, a hue that sought to capture infinity itself. On Hydra, he declared, “Blue has no dimensions, it is beyond.”
Before Klein, the island had already inspired the Greek poet Giorgos Seferis who wrote of light without weight, where each shadow is an opening rather than an end. For Seferis, Hydra was a place of elemental clarity, where the starkness of stone against sea revealed the most essential truths.
LIVING INQUIRYThrough playful, embodied engagement with the elemental forces, we’ll attune to our own living inquiry, inviting the island’s genius loci, its particular spirit of place, to move through us as a creative current. We will listen, receive, experiment, and create from a state of deepened presence, surrendering to the wisdom of the unconscious via image and metaphor, and the ecology of place.
A living inquiry acts as a portal to be entered and explored. It is an active relationship with the unknown, an unfolding process that prompts our openness and playful, creative attunement.
During this six day residence, we’ll explore inquiry as a mode of being rather than a means to an end. In engaged presence, the body, the landscape, and the dream world become revelatory texts, guiding us toward what is most alive and emergent.
Rather than imposing meaning, we will cultivate receptivity: the art of listening to what wants to be known and met through sensation, image, medium, and voice. The dream or inner image will be our companions, inviting deeper communion with self and world.
We will explore the body and matter as dream-space, a site of knowing beyond language. Improvising across mediums — writing, movement, sound, and visual expression — we’ll engage with the ways inner and outer landscapes mirror and inform one another, allowing inquiry to inhabit us and shape our creative process.
BODY AS VESSELThe name Hydra, in Greek, means both vessel and wellspring. It is both container and source, a paradox that hints at the island’s power and mystery.
To be a vessel is to cultivate the capacity to receive. To touch the source is to make contact with the ineffable, to stand at the threshold of something larger than the self and allow it to move through.
In residence, we will explore how to become an instrument for creative wisdom and how to playfully attune to the deep wellspring from which it flows.
The presence of Apollo, the ancient Greek god of prophecy, poetry, and divine inspiration, on the island invites us to consider the nature of the channel. What does it mean to receive illumination? What disciplines of listening, presence, and surrender make such reception possible?
Throughout our time on Hydra, we will explore the practice of channeling as a living, embodied experience.
Through creative practice, we will deepen awareness of the inner vessel, cultivating the sensitivity required to receive. Through engagement with inner and outer image, we will deepen our capacity to recognize and respond to the subtle transmissions that emerge in the living dream.
By tuning ourselves as instruments through body, voice, and image, we’ll engage with the mystery of creation and participate in its playful unfolding.
